Ive noticed a lot of people asking for help on totems in multiple threads across all the Faunasphere forums. I have also noticed the lack of any one place to look for info, there is a sticky involving totems, however the main post is a question making it seam like thats not the place to find ALL totem info. So I decided to search the forums and find all the info on totems I could as well as the knowledge of my own totem. I hope you find this info helpful.
~ Kiyalynn <-- may of been slightly bored today.
Totems sell one of 12 items needed for community projects, If they have the lux to produce these items. Items are then sold to anyone who wishes to purchase them from the totem in your Fauna sphere. Buyers of the items then turn them into the community projects in each world for chances at the raffle and other prizes.
Getting Totem: The totem goal is from the goal station in the rock garden. (If you are unsure as to where the goal station there is check the map button in the lower right hand corner). You must complete the 'nest' goal before the totem goal becomes available.
Goal:
Forest world walkthough wrote: Get on the Totem Grid - Accept the goal - dig and zap in the Rock Garden until you collect the 3 pieces needed to assemble a totem. Find a Totem Lowman (grey monkey head),a Totem coffer ( a package that looks like a wrapped gift), and a Totem base ( round gridlike disk). Go to your sphere. Open the inventory and click on the idea tab. Plant the totem idea in your sphere. Click on the idea and click on open. Click on your inventory and place each of the 3 totem items in the idea. Then click on create. You will now have a big grey monkey head that will create commodities for other caretakers to purchase. You have no control over what commodity the totem makes.
You will need to deposit lux in the totem to get it to start producing your commodity. Just click on the totem, click on the wizard hat on the left tab and deposit some lux in the deposit area at the bottom of the totem screen. You can determine how many commodities you totem will make per hour and how much you will charge on the next two screens. You can also change the name and put a personal message on your totem at the top of the first page. The middle tab is for gifts - people can leave some for you or you can leave some at others totems. One time goal, you may only have 1 totem.
Patrons/Capacity: Having patrons means you
can produce more product, faster... but for more lux in cost. To get patrons others must buy a set amount for every time your totem levels up in Capacity. You can tell the level by the lighted dots on the left side of the Totem status (third tab). Every time this levels up Patrons must buy more to become a patron, and more patrons are needed. Note: Becoming a patron on someone elses totem does not necessarily help you or your totem in any way. However, If you leave a small gift (food, Tasty fluff , anything [gifting is available on the second tab, as well as picking up gifts on your own totem] ) with a message saying you patronized (and whos gate you came though if your not a friend of that person) they will often come to your totem and patronize yours if you have enough in sock for them to do so. This can be a helpful strategy for leveling up your Capacity. Patrons should note that they can become a patron again each time the totem levels up. If you buy 20 when the totem is level 1 you are a patron. But you are not a patron for level 2, if you buy 40 then you become a patron. However, if you buy more than it takes you to become a patron say 60, than you are a patron for both levels (or however high you buy to)
Efficiency: Efficiency levels up when so many items are bought for a profit. (Note: If it is a minimal profit of say 1-2 lux Than the discounted bulk price will not actually be sold at profit. ) As long as you are selling at a profit this will level, Until it reaches level 5 right above the bird line ( between level 4-5). Then The efficiency can get a lock icon on it if your Capacity has not also reached that level. I would not worry about it, Just concentrate on getting more patrons. When your Capacity reaches level 5 and you receive your second totem head the efficiency will unlock and level up. (given that you are selling at a profit)
Pricing: The setup wizard guides you though pricing and production level. Every time you totem levels up in Capacity you are able to produce more, but you must manually set this. Re-setting price is done by going though the setup wizard again.
Set up Wizard: this is found on the first tab of your totem (only seen on your own totem, this is the buy tab for visitors) :
Step 1 lets you deposit or withdraw funds from you totem. Remember: your totem needs lux to produce its product. Also know that if your selling at a profit you shouldn’t run out of lux here. (Exception: if you have a larger stock of product than the lux in your totem can afford. Then you either need to have someone buy some of your stock so that you can keep producing or add more lux should you run out of lux).
Step 2 Allows you to set how fast your totem is producing. The faster it produces the more lux it will take to produce each item.
Step 3 is where you set your price. Your price may be set to anything here but should you overprice it is unlikely anyone will buy from you. If you severely under price often people will just completely buy you out, meaning your out of supply for the next person, tho people love you for selling cheap <3.
Totem Heads: You totem receives a second head every 5 levels in
both Capacity and Efficiency. Starting heads are a monkey for the first level, Bird for second, Cat for third, and Eagle for the fourth (and I believe last) level. These can be changed out in favor for others buy buying new totem pieces in the Searing Mesa world Gritswallow flats. They are available for both Lux and Bux. Please note: Heads are not interchangeable once you place one it is there. If you replace your first head with a peice make sure it is one you want on the bottom.
Naming your totem Differently: In searching for more info to include about totems, I found that a common question was how to change the name of your totem. You do this in the first tab of your totem by clicking the top line where the name is (starting name is always ~
Your Name s Totem ~). Once you have clicked there a typing cursor appears allowing you to erase the current Totem name and type in a name you feel would be better.
Buyers/Community projects: Buying is on the first tab of the totem when visiting. I have found that a reasonable price to buy at is between 75-125 lux. As a buyer you should keep in mind that the higher leveled the totem is the more it may cost that person to produce items. Items are turned in for prizes at the community projects in each of the worlds where you can get a chance at a raffle and up to 3 prizes for turning in items. (the quest
Projects and Prizes gives detailed info about community projects and is found in the rock garden). I would also like to note here that each of the community projects have 3 people listed as the top ticket holders. That does not mean they have won the raffle or the prizes at the project. It only means they have a higher chance and they have turned in the most tickets. You
can win with 1 ticket, a very lucky ticket. Chances for winning are increased when you turn in more items and receive ticket for that project. Projects list how many tickets you have for each one. Projects run until they are at 100% completion, This can take a day or a few, depending on how fast people turn in items needed. It then takes 4 hours and the project will reset, allowing for whole new chances at prizes. Note: Totems only can sell one of 12 items there are 13 types of items to be donated at the Community Projects. The 13th type is bio-fuel and accepts any food type.
Resource quotes from the source:
Mod_Siren wrote: I just thought I would pop in and shed some light on the Totems. Your Totem leveling up is dependent on the Efficiency and Capacity levels. It is not directly dependent on the actual Patron amount.
When you are checking to see how many patrons you need, that number reflects how many patrons you need for your Capacity level to increase. Each time your Capacity goes up one number, the amount of patrons you need to hit the next Capacity level resets. Once Efficiency and Capacity have reached a certain point, that's when you will obtain a new totem head.
If you would like to see your progress on your next totem head, you can look at the different levels on your Totem Progress screen. You will see that each level is identified by a line that runs across the screen after certain Capacity and Efficiency levels. Those lines indicate the levels you need to hit in order to obtain a totem head

Ok so now it's a sticky, I will stick this in here for further information, hope no-one minds, it's an older post from back in beta but I've amended it to make it a little more up to date.
Canopies & Totems
Currently the items made by the totems are used to contribute to the available canopies. Rock Garden, Frozen Village, Mire Knoll & Searing Mesa. - for what FS calls Community Projects.
You can also donate Basic Foods such as any roots or food from trees, but not combined/modified foods.
If you contribute enough for a given number of tickets, you can 'win' up to 3 items as shown in the bottom left hand side of the Canopy screen when you click on it. This is not a lottery, you receive those prizes if you contribute enough for the tickets required
By contributing, you also stand a chance of winning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize as shown top left of the same Canopy screen. This is a 'lottery' type winning where what you might win does not depend on the number or tickets you 'buy'.
The canopies stay open until all the required items have been contributed and then the prizes are sent to your totem gift box and the Canopy restarts.
Your totem also makes you money. What you produce in your totem is set by the game, not chosen. Providing it has the minimum amount of money to start, and you set the Totem Wizard to make a reasonable amount per hour (Capacity) and at a profit (Efficiency), by people buying, it can be more or less self maintaining.
It works on 2 levels..Capacity and Efficiency and you make the decisions how to set these. Although there are restrictions depending on the levels you are at.
You need Patrons to increase your Capacity. Patrons must buy a certain amount to become a patron. Once a level is reached, an existing patron can become a patron again buy buying the remaining amount needed for that next level.
Efficiency Level is governed by being able to sell the required number of items at a profit.
Being a patron of someone's totem does not exactly give benefits to the buyer, except that they can hope that others return the 'favour' by buying from each others totems to make patron.
Having patrons and buyers helps you move up totem levels and can make you lux without having to really do anything except maybe a bit of Totem Promotion
as well as adjusting production and price as you go along. You can withdraw lux from your totem providing you leave the minimum required amount in there to continue production. If there are no funds in the totem, production will cease until funds are available either by someone buying from it or you adding funds to it.
ETA
Totem Efficiency levels will become locked, if your totem needs to gain a certain level of Capacity. They will be unlocked when that Capacity level is reached. This is common when trying to attain the milestone Capacity Levels such as 5 and 11 when you receive a new addition to your totem - bird, eagle etc.
Hope this helps.
Random Totem Tips:
~ Sellers: Placing totem within visible range of your friend gate Makes it easier on buyers. Many buyers are just after the product your selling and have many other spheres to visit. No matter how beautiful your sphere is buyers are sure to appreciate not having to spend extra time crossing it.
~ Sellers: Keeping totems and gates easily accessible is also nice to attract buyers. Someone struggling to click though decorations or food trees may not want to buy many from you or may not come back and patron again.
~ Buyers: can patronize totems every time it levels up in capacity.
~ Buyers: should note that buying someone completely out of stock is not necessarily good. That keeps the seller from being able to get another patron when someone else passes though. Therefore stunting their capacity growth. However, becoming a patron and buying what ever necessary to do so is always welcome.
